Kooyoora Independent Redress Scheme

Kooyooras Independant Redress Scheme was established following the 2014 Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. It acknowledges that child sexual abuse took place in Australian institutions and aims to make these institutions accountable for the harm caused. It lets survivors seek support and get acknowledgment and compensation for the injustice they faced, but only if the relevant institution is part of the Scheme.

The Scheme has three parts:

  • A financial redress settlement agreement

  • Access to counseling and psychological service

  • A personal response from the participating institution

Who can apply?

To be eligible for the scheme, certain matters are considered:

  • The abuse is of a sexual nature.

  • The victim was under 18 years old when the abuse occurred.

If a settlement isn't reached, the Scheme provides survivors with these choices:

  • Apply to the National Redress Scheme for a decision on the redress application if the institution involved is part of that scheme.

  • Withdraw the application for redress under this scheme and explore other options for redress.

Our Redress Manager manages this process independently and fairly, using a survivor-centered and trauma-informed approach.

This is helpful for redress claims that could result in civil lawsuits. It lets survivors opt for negotiation and settlement as the first step for all claims, including civil litigation claims.
